There is no rule worth obeying here, whatever you have heard about two or three months' salary (a jewelry-marketing line from the last century, not a law). Spend what fits your life. Because most of our rings are settings, you have a lever most stores do not give you: the setting and the stone are priced separately, so choosing a lab grown center or a slightly smaller natural one changes the total without changing the design you love. In North America, the engagement ring traditionally goes on the fourth finger of the left hand, the one beside the pinky, usually called the ring finger. The custom traces back to an old belief in a vein running from that finger to the heart. Traditions vary by country and by couple, so wear it where it means something to you.
